IFPI ontwikkeld strategieen, welke door de verschillende afdelingen worden uitgevoerd. Ook lobby't IFPI bij de politiek. IFPI probeert daarnaast ook iets te doen aan de illegale-muziekindustrie, licensing en ze organiseren verschillende communicatie kanalen en doen marktonderzoek.

Elk, bedrijf, organisatie of persoon die muziek, cd's, of videoclips produceert die publiekelijk worden gemaakt kan lid worden van de IFPI. IFPI creeert en promoot de rechten van de producters. Er worden duidelijke afspraken en conventies gemaakt.
