De engelse definitie volgens http://retailindustry.about.com/od/glossary/g/flagshipstorede.htm Of nautical origin, the term "flagship" refers to a ship which is the largest, fastest, newest, most heavily armed, most well known, or the lead ship in a fleet. When applied to a particular retail store, the designation of flagship is given to a retailer's primary location, a store in a prominent location, a chain's largest store, the store that holds or sells the highest volume of merchandise, a retailer's most well-known location, a chain's first retail outlet, or the store location in a chain which carries the most high-priced merchandise catering to the most upscale customers.

In het Nederlands zou men dus kunnen zeggen dat het de meest prominente en belangrijkste winkel van een bepaald merk is. Dit kan zijn omdat het het grootste filiaal is, het het filiaal is wat de meeste mensen kennen, het een testwinkel is of omdat het de duurste producten van het merk verkoopt.

Aangezien het hierbij meestal gaat om kleding merken is dit niet heel erg gelinkt aan de vrije tijds branche. Wel zijn er ook enkele elektronica winkels die een flagship store hebben zoals de Nokia Flagship Store Wat wel erg interessant is om deze winkels als voorbeeld te nemen voor beleving. In veel flagship stores worden nieuwe marketing middelen en beleving centraal gezet door bijvoorbeeld te testen met geur marketing of muziek.
